Associated Student Body (ASB)

Purpose

The Associated Student Body (ASB) is the student government at Acaciawood School. The ASB performs a variety of functions:

  • It helps to organize and coordinate school events and outings.
  • It helps to initiate, lead, and carry out philanthropic/community service projects, student activities, fundraisers, and other activities in support of the school.
  • It represents the student body to the school administration and faculty in matters related to student life at Acaciawood School, primarily outside of the classroom. These include student activities and outings, fundraising, and improving the facilities and service available to the students.

Membership

ASB is composed of four officers (president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer) and six class representatives, one from each grade from 7 th to 12 th. All officers and representatives are elected by closed ballot by the students.

In order to run for the offices of ASB president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer, candidates must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Two recommendations in writing must be obtained from two separate teachers and turned in to the ASB advisor by the published deadline in order to declare candidacy. In addition, in order to run for president or vice-president of the Acaciawood ASB, a student must be a junior or senior in high school. In order to run for secretary or treasurer of the Acaciawood ASB, a student must be in high school.

In order to run for the office of ASB class representative, a student must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.75, and approval must be obtained from one’s homeroom teacher.

Responsibilities/How it functions

Officers have specific responsibilities. The president oversees all ASB activities by scheduling meetings, delegating tasks, and monitoring progress. The vice president assists the president in oversight as well as calling for a count on all legislative votes. In the case where the president is unable to fulfill his or her responsibilities the vice president will temporarily assume presidential duties. The secretary records minutes of all ASB meetings including the agenda, attendance, and the results of all legislative votes. The treasurer is in charge of all ASB expenditures and must keep track of all financial transactions.

Weekly meetings are held typically every Wednesday but meetings are subject to change based on other school activities, such as volleyball and basketball games. All members are required to attend all meetings, but may be excused in advance with approval. Meetings are an open-forum discussion with the president acting as the moderator. Representatives are encouraged to participate as much as possible to convey the opinions and desires of their respective class.

What the ASB does

Every year, the ASB plans various school events. These include:

  • Game Day in which students, families, friends, and the faculty are mixed into different teams and compete against each other in various games. This time is usually concluded with an ASB organized BBQ.
  • Spirit Week, a week in which each day is assigned a different theme, such as Color Day, Twin Day, Clash Day, or Cultural Day. Students come to school wearing clothes that correspond to the theme of that day. Each day also consists of special festivities planned by the ASB.
  • The Talent Show, a program featuring an exhibition of various student talents.
  • Philanthropic Day, a day for the students and the faculty to participate in a community service activity all day in order to foster altruism and awareness of societal needs.
  • An All-School Outing as a day where the ASB organizes a fun outing for the whole school so that they can blend and have an enjoyable experience together in a setting outside school.

Planning and organizing such activities are not only a responsibility for the ASB, but a rewarding experience because these activities promotes school spirit and provide an opportunity for the entire Acaciawood community to blend together as one family.
