Brief Course Description:

This is a two semester course for ninth graders which covers the basis of life, genetics, change and diversity, the moneran, protist, and fungi kingdoms, invertebrate and vertebrate animals, and human biology.

Course Goals and/or Major Student Outcomes:

This is rigorous and challenging course designed to establish a firm foundation in biological concepts for any student intending to pursue higher levels of science. The goals for this course are:

  1. To engage the student in the fascinating and intriguing world of biology and provide them with a lifetime understanding and appreciation for the marvels of this natural world. However due to the nature of this course self-discipline and responsibility on part of the student must be developed and enhanced to its maximum.
  2. To equip the student with effective learning strategies and study skills that will enable them to be independent learners.
  3. To equip the student to write in a methodic and scientific way. The mechanics and style of scientific writing will be developed and practiced throughout the year.
  4. To train the student to actively be involved in the investigation process of science. A series of Laboratory exercises have been prepared with the goal to provide the students with sufficient laboratory skills. At the same the student will engage in the higher and deeper levels of investigation by applying the Scientific Method and participating in Acaciawood’s Science Fair.

Key Assignments:

Students enrolled in this course will be assigned a variety of works to do throughout the school year.

  • The student will be assigned daily homework of a minimum of 30 minutes.
  • The student will also be assigned to conduct research for two major projects during the year.
  • The student will be given laboratory and dissection assignments that need to be concluded during class time and outside of class.

Prerequisites:

Successful completion of life, earth and physical science at the junior high level, successful completion of Algebra I.
